Handle with Care: Making Diamonds in Jewellery Last Long

broken image

After acquiring your jewellery with colourless or argyle pink diamonds in Sydney, it's important that you handle the precious stones with utmost care. They may be tough enough to cut glass or can withstand high heat but just oil from your fingertips can already contaminate the stone and lose its sparkle.

So how can you ensure that the diamonds on your bracelet, ring or necklace retain its sparkle?

Ultrasonic cleaners aren't necessarily your best friends.

Especially when you're handling loose diamonds, use ultrasonic jewellery cleaner with caution because the low frequency sound waves could chip the surfaces when they rub against each other. Also, when your diamonds have been treated, the vibrations could adversely affect your precious stones. To be safe, have a professional jeweller to handle the cleaning with ultrasonic equipment.

Clean them gently.

Don't use harmful solutions such as chlorine bleach when cleaning your jewellery because they can damage the metal setting that holds the diamonds. Similarly, avoid household cleaners and other abrasives because they can scratch your jewellery's metal components.

You can clean your diamond jewellery with a soft toothbrush but don't use toothpaste with it. Toothpaste is also an abrasive. Using a toothbrush, avoid brushing your jewellery vigorously especially when the diamonds are set on a tension setting or on traditional prong. Make sure to close the drain to avoid losing your precious piece when it accidentally slips off your fingers. Rinse off with running water and dry it off with a soft cloth.

Clean diamonds once or twice a week.

Regular cleaning is important to ensure diamonds won't lose their sparkle. To start, create homemade jewellery cleaning solution using a few drops of dishwashing liquid in water. Then soak your jewellery in it for degreasing. Afterwards, you can rub off the rest of the dirt especially the hard-to-reach areas using a toothbrush.

Lastly and most importantly, don't touch the diamonds often.

Don't handle your diamonds for unnecessary reasons. As mentioned earlier, your fingertips have natural oils that can make your diamonds dull.
